Ten years ago Margie and I sailed to Albany NY, then back to Florida. We got to be friends with a number of other cruisers along the way, meeting couples from all walks of life, that we still keep in contact with today. After a day or two of secluded anchorages we would see another boat anchored nearby and stop to introduce ourselves. After chatting about anchorages ahead, weather and maybe boat issues we would see a connection and invite our new friends over for happy hour drinks and snacks. Everybody would bring something, sometimes for just an hour, sometimes we would chat late in the evening. We still keep in touch with many of the friends we made, here’s a little about a recent meet up with our cruising friends Steve and Helen.
We originally met them in Elizabeth City after making our way through the Dismal Swamp Canal (sounds scary but was pretty cool) waiting for weather to cross the Albemarle Sound. They were also headed to Florida and later the Bahama’s where we would see them again. We spearfished and snorkeled together in the Berry Islands, later saw them in Georgetown. Over the years our paths have crossed in Florida as they passed through to the Bahamas but this Thanksgiving we were both in Monterey Bay and got together for some surfing (at least for the kids) and a really cool behind the scenes tour of The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Turns out that Steve spent some of his younger day’s with one of their researchers so we got to go along for an amazing look at their research vessels and submersibles. You never know where your cruising friendships will take you.
