Margie and I have been considering putting together a trip in the Greek Islands for the last 5 years, we travel to Israel quite frequently to visit our daughter and stopping to explore the Aegean was high on both our lists. We did extensive research but because we did not have a personal connection over there and with our concern that our customers have a great experience we did not feel comfortable booking a trip.
Two years ago we met Captain Valerie Winegard through our friends and co instructors Captain Jeff and Jean after they had chartered a 50′ Sailboat in ASA’s Greek Island flotilla. I was was run by Captain Valerie. After spending quite a bit of time with her we realized that we had found our connection to comfortably rent a boat in Greece. She has spent the last 10 full summers captaining charters in Greece, in the wintertime she puts together charters in the BVI’s. She lives and grew up in Atlanta when she is not traveling and sailing. She has also taught ASA classes for us Island Dreamer Sailing School here in Florida. We have become personal friends, she even joined us for our last family Passover Seder.
Our plan is that Valerie will also have a charter on the 49 Bavaria she rents for the summer and we will “buddy boat”. We may be joined by Captains Bob and Ann who also teach for us and are putting together a trip on a third boat to run concurrently with ours. We will still set our own schedule, Margie and I are quite comfortable with running independently if their timing or destinations don’t fit with what our customers want to do. Margie and I will have a local cell phone and the ability to call both Valerie and the charter company for advice and or issues if there is a need.
Margie and I are planning to get to Athens several days early to get familiar with both the boat and local provisioning options. We have traveled extensively abroad and enjoy shopping for quality local foods. Margie does all the cooking on our charters, we will send you a food preference sheet in advance. It includes a sample menu of the types of meals we serve, we will vary it based on what is available locally but we have a commitment to quality healthy food. We expect to make full breakfast and lunches, Dinner will be ashore at a local tavenra. We will also get fresh items locallyat the islands we visit.
We have chartered Batavia 49, with 3 Guest cabins along with a cabin for Margie and I and one for luggage. It has three heads with showers. We have one week filled and still have space on our second week September 14th-20th, 2013
Margie and I have been doing liveaboard charters for the last 5 years and living aboard our sailboat for the last 11. Before that we owned a window treatment business in Palm Beach for 23 years that specialized in very high end clients. In both our businesses our goal has been to provide both great service and a positive experience for our customers/guests.Take a moment to look at our guest comments at http://island-dreamer.com/
